Quiet On Sunday Eyes On Potential Gulf Tropical System

Quiet on Sunday; Eyes on potential Gulf tropical system

Sunday's weather and an update on the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season

With Hurricane Ian still dominating news headlines, the Atlantic Hurricane season remains front and center with only seven weeks remaining in 2023.

So far this year, the Atlantic has seen nine named storms, including Ian, the only major hurricane of the season so far.

There are no tropical cyclones expected to impact the United States over the next 48 hours. Hurricane Ian continues to bring impacts to the southeastern United States, and all eyes are on the Gulf of Mexico where a broad area of low pressure could soon develop into the next tropical system.

What is the NHC monitoring in the Gulf of Mexico?

As of Sunday evening, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring an area of low-pressure over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico for possible tropical development during the next few days.

As of now, the chance for tropical development is low over the next two days, and only 10% within the next five days.

Regardless of development, heavy rainfall is possible over portions of eastern Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula, and western Cuba during the next few days.

A look ahead into October and November

October is historically the most active month of the Atlantic hurricane season, and forecasters predict an above-average season this year.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center released an updated seasonal outlook for the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season in early August.

NOAA predicted a 60% chance of an above-normal season, a 30% chance of a near-normal season, and only a 10% chance of a below-normal season.

The rest of hurricane season

Hurricane season officially ends on November 30. September is typically the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane season, but major hurricanes have formed into early November in the past, including Hurricane Kate in 2022 and Hurricane Eta in 2020.

If a tropical system were to develop in the Gulf of Mexico this week, it would be named Karl.

Residents along the Gulf Coast should continue to monitor the tropics and have a hurricane plan in place as we enter the peak of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season.
