Lester Horton: American Dance Pioneer
Early Years and Education
Lester Iradell Horton (January 23, 1906 - November 2, 1953) was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. As a young boy, Horton developed a deep fascination with the American Indian culture and its traditional dances, which profoundly influenced his artistic journey.
In the 1920s, 30s, and 40s, Horton developed a unique modern dance technique that drew inspiration from Native American dances, anatomical studies, and other movement influences. This groundbreaking technique would become known as the Horton Technique.
