Effective Immediately, Employees Can Choose Juneteenth in Place of Personal Holiday
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- History was made today as Governor Gavin Newsom declared Juneteenth National Freedom Day as a state holiday in California. The proclamation, effective immediately, allows state employees to choose Juneteenth off in lieu of a personal holiday.
This momentous decision marks a significant step towards recognizing the historical importance of Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
While Juneteenth is not yet one of the 11 paid state holidays for all California workers, this proclamation demonstrates a growing awareness and commitment to honoring the legacy of Black liberation.
